High blood pressure is a serious condition that may lead
to coronary heart disease, heart failure, stroke, infarction, kidney failure
etc.
Blood pressure is the
pressure that blood exerts on the arteries. If it rises and stays high for a
long time, it can damage the body in many ways.
What is systolic and diastolic pressure?
The pressure in the
arteries, while the heart is shrinking and pumps blood into the arteries) is called systolic.
Diastolic pressure is actually the lowest pressure to which arteries are
exposed, when the heart relaxes, after the contraction.
Reasons for high systolic or diastolic blood pressure
- hardening of the
arteries, if not treated promptly (atherosclerosis)
- damage to the optic
nerve and retina of the eye
- stroke
It is believed that
blood pressure between 130/80 and 140/90 is suitable for most people. But, for others
pressure 130/80 or higher, means you are in the risk, if:
you already have kidney
problems or suffer from
diabetes
suffering from
cardiovascular diseases, such as infarction, ischemic heart disease or stroke
chronic kidney disease

This table can be
applied to people, who do not suffer from other serious diseases, though. You
should know that blood pressure is not constant. It decreases while you sleep ,and
rises when awake.
Blood pressure can rise when you're nervous, excited,
hyperactive or during bad
weather (when increasing
the pressure, magnetic storms, etc.). If you keep a long time the same high
levels( in 7-10 days) you are at risk and should visit a doctor.
Probably wondering to
which category you belong , if you have blood
pressure 160 / 80. In this situation you
are in stage 2. Accordingly, if you have blood pressure 120/95 then your blood
pressure refers to stage 1- hypertension.
When your high blood
pressure is with unknown reason, it can be classified as essential hypertension, primary
or idiopathic hypertension.
When another condition
causes high blood pressure, then it is called secondary hypertension. Some people develop only high systolic
blood pressure, which is called isolated
systolic hypertension. Many older people have this one. It should not be consolation,
because it can cause serious problems.
Reasons for high blood pressure
There is a tendency, blood pressure to increases with the age.
Naturally, there are
diseases that may increase blood pressure much faster, these are - chronic
renal failure,
thyroid disease, sleep
apnea and
certain medicines.
Birth control, hormone
therapy, and pregnancy may also increase blood pressure. If during menopause
see increase in systolic pressure, then contact your doctor !!! You should know
the fact that, children under 10 years of age, suffering from high blood pressure,
have one more disease (e.g., renal disease), which causes this high blood
pressure.
Risk Groups
- Elderly people
- Overweight and obesity
- Sex (before '45 men are
more prone to high blood pressure, but after '65 things are changing and women
are affected more often. Usually men under the '55 are tend to uncontrolled
high blood pressure).
- Excessive use of salt
- Alcohol
- Physical inactivity
- Lack of potassium in diet
- Smoking
- Family fate
Signs and symptoms of high blood pressure
Many people have high
blood pressure many years before to understand. During this time, high blood
pressure can damage heart, blood vessels, kidneys and other body parts. Many
people understand this after a stroke.
If a long time suffering from high blood pressure, that
can lead to:
heart failure (the heart can not pump enough blood to all organs)
aneurysm
(blood vessel formation) - the places where you can form aneurysm are the main
artery (which carries blood from the heart to the body), the arteries in the
brain and feet, the artery leading to the spleen.
narrowed blood vessels in the kidneys - this can lead to renal failure
rupture of blood vessels in the eye - may lead to changes in vision or blindness
When arteries in
different places in the body are reduced (eg aneurysm) it leads to limited or
reduced blood flow to the heart, brain, kidneys and legs. This can cause heart
attack, stroke or kidney failure.
If your blood pressure
is held for a long time within 140/90 , it is considered of high blood
pressure.
Attention! When you suffer from diabetes or kidney failure, for
high blood pressure is considered 130/80 or higher!
Get rid of high blood pressure without medicines.
Treatment with natural remedies, herbs and diets.
1. Keep a healthy diet.
Potassium, magnesium and
fiber can help control blood pressure. Fruits and vegetables containing them are:
- apples, apricots,
bananas, beets, broccoli, carrots, cabbage, green beans, grapes, green peas,
beans, mango, cantaloupe, oranges, peaches, pineapples, potatoes, raisins,
spinach, strawberries, sweet potatoes, tangerines, tomatoes, fish (mackerel,
salmon), yogurt (fat under 1%)
- nuts- pumpkin seeds
- reduce salt - no more
than one teaspoon a day
2. Do exercise daily.
- aerobic exercises (at
least 30 minutes daily). Systematic exercises can reduce by up to 10 mmHg blood
pressure, at rest
- swimming, dancing,
fitness, kalnetika tennis
- cycling
- jogging, cardio (exercise
bike, treadmill)
- daily walks (2-3 km)
- climbing stairs
- yoga, meditation
3. Maintain a healthy weight.
Maintaining a healthy
weight can control high blood pressure and reduce risk of other health
problems. Reduce calories and increase physical activity.
4. Give up smoking.
It can damage the blood
vessels.
What kind of tests I need?
To eliminate the risk of
other diseases need to do the following tests:
- ECG (electrocardiogram)
- CBC (complete blood
count) - blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides
- test by an endocrinologist
- test by a nephrologist
- thyroid test
- ultrasound of the heart
and kidneys
- brain test
