Cough: What is it?
It is body’s needs to
get rid of unnecessary substances that irritate the airways, and they transmit
air through the nose and mouth to the lungs.
When the respiratory
tract is exposed to irritation, air in the lungs is forced to leave them very
quickly, under high pressure.
Causes of cough
There are a lot of
causes, but doctors say that, acute and
chronic are the two main categories.
Acute cough
It takes about 3 weeks,
and may be triggered by infectious and non- infectious causes.
Infectious causes:
viral infections of
upper respiratory tract infections (the common cold)
sinus infections
pneumonia and whooping
cough
Non-infectious causes - exacerbation of chronic diseases such as:
chronic bronchitis
emphysema
allergies
Cough-signs and symptoms
fever, chills
body aches, sore throat
nausea, vomiting,
headache
pressure in the sinuses,
fever, night sweats, sputums
Chronic cough
It will be quite
difficult to set its symptoms, because it has very often common symptoms with acute
cough. If the cough is caused by irritants from the environment, it would
deteriorate itself upon exposure to these irritants.
If you suffer from
allergic cough, the causes are quite different and you must take necessary
medicines. If you have a cough, caused by smoking, it's nice to stop smoking.
If the cough is caused
by chronic sinus infections, chronic fever or discharge, you will have signs
and symptoms associated with these conditions. Attention! Cough may be the
signal for a cancer.
For example, if you spit
up blood - this can be a sign of cancer of the lung or airways. Other signs of
cancer can be stronger fatigue, loss of appetite, unexplained weight loss, or
difficulty swallowing solid or liquid foods.
If you have these symptoms see a doctor immediately!
