What Gout is?

It is abnormal metabolism of uric acid in the body, resulting in an excess of uric acid in the blood and tissues. Patients suffering from gout "produce" too much uric acid and usually have problems with its removal from their bodies.
The accumulation of this acid results in the formation of acute and chronic gouty arthritis, kidney stones, and its accumulation in the skin and tissue. Gout may occur alone, or may be associated with other diseases and medicines.

Gouty arthritis (a type of arthritis known as gout) is characterized by redness and painful swelling of the joint in the base at the big toe. Usually it starts at night with severe pain. It is also the most common cause of inflammatory arthritis in men over 40 years of age. Gout  crises may increase when there is a change in the uric acid levels, which may be a result of consuming too much alcohol and red meat.

What Causes Gout ?

Genes, sex and diet may play a huge role in formation of gout. Other risk factors are:

You have a 20% chance to develop gout if your parents suffer from it
• If you abuse alcohol (especially beer)
• If you consume excessive amounts of red meat and oily fish

An interesting fact is that uric acid increases during puberty (men) and during menopause (women).

 Gout Symptoms

  • swelling and redness of the joint at the base of the big toe ( first symptoms).
  • knee, ankle joints of the hands also can be affected.
  • for some sufferers the pain is so strong that even touching sheet is unbearable for them.

If you follow properly treatment, gout may fade after 1-2 weeks, but can be back in the same or adjacent joint. Over the time, the crisis could intensify. It is important to note that the patients with gout may often develop kidney stones.

When to See a Doctor?

If you receive the above redness and swelling, immediately see a doctor (rheumatologist), because this may be result of infections, problems with cartilage or other reasons.

Gout-Diagnosis

  • diagnostic ultrasound (kidney, bladder)
  • iridology
  • lab diagnosis
Joint aspiration is one of the best diagnostic tools for detecting gouty arthritis. In the joint is  inserted pin in order to take a sample of the liquid. It is examined under a microscope to see the presence of crystals or signs of bacterial infection. Sometimes it is possible to open calcium pyrophosphate, which occurs as a result of a condition called "pseudo-gout."

Gout Diet

  • The diet includes reduction of the intake of animal-derived food, allowing to control the level of uric acid in the body.
  • Limit alcohol (especially beer) to reduce gout  crises.
  • If you are overweight, reduce it, but gradually because rapid weight-loss can intensify attacks.
  • Drink plenty of water (at least 2 liters per day) to remove the toxins and uric acid from the body.

Limit as much as possible:
  • Red meats (beef, pork and lamb)
  • Fat chicken and fish
  • Reduce fat and dairy products
  • Avoid white bread, cakes, sugar
  • Eat more whole grains, fruits and vegetables

Daily Menu- examples

Breakfast
300-400 grams  oatmeal with 1 tablespoon honey (mix it with low fat milk or yoghurt)
